Beat the Bulge during the Holiday Season

When it comes to the festive holiday season then for most people it includes work parties, social parties, and family get-togethers.  The common thing with all of those is lots of food and drink.

Tis the season of overindulgence but what if you are on a diet or you just don’t want to add any more extra pounds? Rather than miss out on the social and office parties then you could try some of the tips below.  These could help combat the temptation or just enable you to go out and enjoy yourself without worrying too much about what you eat and drink.

You could even keep up with the tips right through the new year and make it more of a habit. Go ahead and read about the following 5 easy ways to avoid putting on weight at Christmas time.

How to avoid putting on weight

1. Drink up

It’s one of the oldest rules in the dieting book but drinking water really does help you slim down.

People often think they’re hungry when they are just thirsty so next time you feel like snacking reach for the tap first.

Sipping water can help you feel full and some experts reckon you should down a glass before you eat a meal.

2. Eat more often

Having lots of light meals throughout the day can help keep your hunger pangs at bay.

Frequent grazing can also boost your energy, lift your mood and speed up your metabolism – because digesting burns calories.

Try to squeeze in an average of five small, healthy meals each day.

3. Ditch the tipple

Regular boozing makes you pile on the pounds.

There are loads of hidden calories in alcohol – for example, a large glass of wine contains as many as a Cornetto ice cream (228kcal).

So if you’re wanting to slim down, cut out the pints. If you can’t go tee-total then swap your nightcap for a more slimline option like a shot of vodka (56kcal) with sparkling water as a mixer.

4. Count to 10

Next time you want to reach for that cupcake or mince pie, stop and take a short time-out.

Studies suggest that the average craving lasts only 10 minutes so distract yourself by doing something else – and you probably won’t cave in.

5. Get active

Swimming

Burn calories by energising your lifestyle. If you’re scared of signing up for a lifetime gym membership then make small changes to your routine instead, like walking for 15 minutes each day.

But the best kind of exercise is when it doesn’t feel like hard work at all. Try taking up a new hobby which helps you get physical too. Swimming, dancing, rock climbing or even bowling are great ways to shape up while still having fun.
